Joomla

The open-source CMS this website itself runs on.

Joomla is an open-source content management system. We build websites and e-shops on it, and this very page runs on it. It is not a rented platform — the installation is yours, the content and data sit on your own hosting, and nobody can raise a monthly fee overnight or switch off a feature your business depends on.

What Joomla is

Joomla was released in 2005 and has been developed by an international community under the GNU GPL ever since. The system itself costs nothing: you pay for the work and the hosting, not for a licence. It runs on ordinary PHP hosting with a MySQL or MariaDB database, so even an inexpensive plan will do. The current series is Joomla 6.

  • Open source — You and anyone else can read the source files. The site can be handed over to another supplier without being rewritten.
  • No licence fees — The system is free and stays free. The budget goes into the website, not into monthly rent for software.
  • Your own installation — Content, database and files live on your hosting. You can download a backup any time and move it elsewhere.
  • Ordinary hosting is enough — PHP and MySQL are supported by practically every provider, including the cheapest ones.
  • Built to last — The project has been running continuously since 2005 and upgrades between major versions are documented and tested.
  • Extensible — Thousands of ready-made extensions, plus the option to have exactly what you are missing written for you.

Joomla in numbers

1.1%

of all websites worldwide

Among sites whose content management system can be identified it is 1.7%. That makes Joomla the fifth most used CMS, right behind WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace (W3Techs, September 2026).

155 M

downloads since 2005

A figure published by the Joomla project. Six major series have come and gone in that time, each with a documented upgrade path.

4,907

extensions in the official directory

Joomla Extensions Directory, September 2026 — from forms and SEO through e-commerce to security. Whatever is missing can be written for you.

1,500+

volunteers behind the project

Joomla is run by a non-profit and its community, not by a single company. Nobody can sell it, raise its price or shut it down overnight.

Half of all Joomla sites run a version without support

According to W3Techs (September 2026), Joomla 3 still powers 52.6% of all Joomla websites even though it no longer receives security fixes. The supported series are the minority: Joomla 5 has 20.6%, Joomla 4 8.4% and Joomla 6 8.1%. That is not a flaw in the system — it is an upgrade nobody finished, and finishing it is exactly what we do.

What Joomla is good at

Multilingual out of the box

A second language is not an add-on you buy. Joomla handles language versions of content, menus and URLs on its own — this site has a Czech and an English version without a single paid plugin.

User permissions

Who may see what and who may edit it can be set in detail. That suits closed customer areas as well as editorial teams where everyone looks after their own part of the site.

Templates without touching the core

Layout and listings are changed through template overrides, not by editing system files. A Joomla update therefore does not overwrite your work.

Custom fields

Add the fields you need to an article, a contact or a user account. There is no need to commission a custom component for that.

SEO under control

Readable URLs, your own titles and descriptions, redirects for old addresses and a sitemap — all handled straight from the administration.

One-click updates

Security fixes for the core and for extensions are installed from the administration. No FTP, no waiting for your supplier.

When Joomla makes sense

A site meant to last for years

A company presentation, a service catalogue, a multilingual site with dozens of pages. You manage the content yourself, the structure can change without a developer, and the system outlives more than one generation of design.

A site that has to do more

A closed customer area, forms, connections to other systems — or a full e-shop on VirtueMart, part of the same website rather than a separate application.

For a one-off landing page or a blog with five articles, Joomla is more than you need. Its strengths show where a site grows, speaks several languages, has several authors, or does more than text and pictures.

What we do with Joomla

New sites and redesigns

Structure, design and a template built to fit. We do not rewrite an old site from scratch when its content and addresses can be kept.

Upgrades to the current version

Sites on Joomla 3 no longer receive security fixes. We handle the move to the current series, including extensions that do not run on it.

Malware removal and rescue

A hacked or long-neglected site can be cleaned up and rebuilt — more about this service.

Our own extensions

We develop and sell our own extensions for Joomla and VirtueMart — shipping, tracking, cookie consent and product feeds.

E-shops on VirtueMart

Selling built directly into Joomla, with the same administration as the rest of the site. Details on the VirtueMart page.

Maintenance and support

Updates, backups and technical support after launch. Our extensions come with written manuals.

What this site runs on

Semakin.cz is built on Joomla 6 with a custom template, two language versions and several of our own extensions — from cookie consent through tracking to the customer area with licences. We run on what we sell. You can also look through our previous work.

Our extensions for Joomla

Cookie consent, a gallery with automatic image resizing and server-side tracking. Ready-made extensions that keep updating with every new Joomla release.
